Match report
Source:Sunday Times 21 July 1918 - via Trove
It was a poor old game in rotten weather at Subiaco yesterday afternoon, where East Perth met the local eighteen. With the exception of the third quarter the game was East
Perth's entirely. The play on both sides was very ragged and rough and tumble throughout, and except for a couple of isolated incidents was quite devoid of interest. Matson still played again, and Subiaco formally entered a protest.
At half-time East had 6.5 to their credit, Subiaco's tally standing at one point which they managed to get in the first quarter. Subiaco bucked up a bit in the third term and got a couple of goals somehow or other. They seemed to get tired of scoring then, and didn't bother about it any more for the rest of the game
The protest

Mr. O'Reilly (East Fremantle) asked what
action had been taken regarding the decision of the permit and umpire committee in the Matson case.
The president replied that the decision of
the committee deregistering Matson had
been conveyed to the East Perth club by
letter, but that the club had since played
Matson in two matches in contravention
of that decision.
Mr. Hyman (S.F) moved: "That East
Perth forfeit the two matches in which
Matson had been played, and that the club
be fined 5 pounds."
Mr. Enright (Subiaco) seconded the motion.
Mr. Norton (E.P) said he had instructions to object to the league dealing with the Matson case.
Mr. Moffatt (Perth) contended that the
question of forfeiture was one for the protests and disputes board, not for the league. At the same time, the league must take some action against a club which had flouted it and he thought a fine would meet the case.
Mr. O'Reilly pointed out that a protest had been lodged in connection with only one of the two matches referred to. East Fremantle had not protested.
Mr. Norton moved, as an amendment: "That consideration of the matter be adjourned until after the appeal by Subiaco had been decided." He would give an undertaking that the club would not play Matson in the meantime. As a matter of
fact, Matson had a poisoned ankle, and could not play in any case.
Mr. Hyman secured permission to alter his motion to read "That East Perth forfeit the match played against East Fremantle, and pay a fine of 5 pounds."
The amendment was carried. |
